Hindsight's a b*tch, foresight isn't that much better

So it’s been a year since I ‘completed’ the 21 things to do before I’m 21 challenge, and I say completed  in inverted commas because I didn’t actually complete anything, it was bit of failure really.

So anyway, where was I…oh yes, as it is a year later I would like to take this time to reflect on my achievements, can’t really think of any right now apart from the fact that I burst out belly dancing at the most inappropriate times. I also got highly excited when I saw rossogollas on sale at Tesco’s although they probably weren’t as weird as mine were, I don’t know, I didn’t buy them.

On the plus side I have now graduated University (yay me!!) but then again on the other side (would you say this was the dark side? Because if it is, yay, because they have cookies) I have absolutely no idea what to do with my life. What career path should I choose? Is anyone actually EVER going to give me a job? Am I going to end up an unemployed waif and stray for the rest of days? And if so how many days of that are left?  (It’s kind of boring, having nothing other to do than job hunting day in day out, although there is a pile of laundry over there that needs doing) Do I need a job to make me happy? The short answer to that question is yes. If you have a job you get money, if you have money you buy things, pretty things and everyone knows money buys you happiness.

Another question I often ask myself whenever I have these pointless musings is what is the point? I mean like what is the reason of life? For those of you who have read this blog (I know who you are, just kidding I have no idea who anyone is anymore. Everything has changed! You’re not the person I thought you were anymore! sob sob yada yada yada) know the meaning of life is 42 and on Oxford Street (the only place to be if you ask me) it is a restaurant (although I have later learnt that Google maps was lying to me and told me about 42 New Oxford Street not the actual Oxford Street, my whole life is a lie!)

But anyway I’ll leave you with one last thought, the world didn’t end on the 21st December because the Mayans forgot to tell us the key element to their prophecy. And that is that 21.12.2012 did not mark the end of the world but the start of a new beginning. Aww thanks guys that makes me feel a whole lot better.

Epic Fail

With my birthday a mere two days away there is still one thing left to do on the list. Even with all the will in the world I find this nigh on near impossible (actually it is impossible) to come up with and execute a plan to raise money for charity.

This is alas not due to a lack of trying. I’ve had meetings with charity personnel and hundreds of half-baked ideas. I even thought as it is the season of frivolity and merriment that going carol singing would be a good idea, no one agreed with me on this one and apparently wondering into town and blasting out  ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ on my todd wouldn’t help generate any money for charideeee, rather earn quite a few odd look and exclamations of ‘good God what is that lunatic doing.’

I have tried, often being an uphill struggle to achieve a full house in my quest. Yet as I fall at the last hurdle, I have to come to the conclusion that this mission has been a complete failure. Maybe I should change it to 22 things to do before I'm 22 and I might get somewhere.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my little (OK it's not so little) blog and I'm sorry that I can't give you a more satisfying ending to this adventure. I shall now go and wallow in misery with pizza and birthday cake. As they say, it's my party and I'll cry if I want to.

The trip to the fan museum a.k.a. the adventures of an incompetent fool

My bucket list (of sorts) has changed many times from the original either due to the fact that the things were too hard or I was running out of time. An example of this would be wanting to milk a cow and knocking down a wall instead or indeed replacing watching all the Disney films with a musical marathon because I didn’t want to watch some of the new monstrosities that Disney studios is producing – Home on the Range or Cars 2 anyone?

Having a fish pedicure was alas one of the things I was looking forward to on the list yet it was not meant to be and I have therefore decided to scrap it in favour of a more challenging concept. Namely to successfully manoeuvre myself round London, hopefully staying in one piece and blogging about my adventure to my friends and strangers alike.
You may think that is not a tall order, but there my friend, you are sorely mistaken. As I hope the events of the day demonstrate.

Wakey wakey rise and shine it’s 6am on a beautiful, fresh December morning and you know that you don’t want to miss a second lying around in bed. Well actually I do, but that’s beside the point, there’s places to go and people to see, destination; The Fan Museum.

For anyone unlucky enough to come into contact with me over the past few weeks (or even months) knows I am doing my dissertation on fans (hand fans that is, not electric fans…) I have bored many people with a lecture or two on fans and their language and as you can possibly imagine I’m just slightly excited to be going to have a nosey round their archives at the fan museum, finding out more and potentially able to pad out my lectures.

The first mishap of the day happened even before I had left the city. I had lost my ticket… I still have the receipt and the seating reservation, but the grumpy ticket man was having none of it. Meaning having to fork out for a new ticket. Cooooooooool. Apparently if you travel before 8:43 it counts as peak tariff, but as I have to be in Greenwich for 11 o’ clock, the sooner I travel, the better (leaving more time to get lost in actual London). I really shouldn’t have worn mascara.

The train was, of course, delayed somewhat but at least I got the right one this time. The tube was surprisingly well behaved, well that was until I had to change to the Dockland light railway. As both trains convened at Canary Warf you would think that I would just have to go to a different part of the station. Au contraie mon amie, it appears that one had to cross a shopping mall to get to the DLR station but I of course did not know this at the time. Leading me to invent a new game…OOOH.

Follow the Builder was the name of said game and it involved pretty much what it says on the tin. My problems were not over as I couldn’t actually remember where I was going. In my haste to recall which tubes to get (the brown one and then the grey one) I had forgotten to familiarise myself with what happens next.

By some Christmas miracle I managed to arrive at the fan museum only 10 minutes late. A large chunk of my dissertation would focus on the language of the fan but apparently,  according to Helene Alexander (who owns the museum and its collection) the fan language is utter RUBBISH – well there goes that idea then. For the next two hours I was prithee to look at the various 18th century fans in the collection and let me tell you, there are lots! From commemorative fans, marking the birth and marriage of George IV and recovery of George III, educational fans, anyone for a History lesson? As well as a range of entertainment such as conundrums and oracles.

I thought I was going to be at the museum for the majority of the day, not just a few hours and thus had booked the return train for 8pm, leaving a good 6 hours to kill. Oh woe is me, however will I amuse myself? Maybe a trip down Oxford Street to ponder the meaning of life will suffice. As the meaning of life is 42 I thought this would be a good place to start. Turns out…it’s a restaurant (the no. 42 on New Oxford Street is).

However, before any deep meaningful thought could occur, I had to find my way out of Greenwich. One would think that the return journey would be easier than the outward trip. Alas, my dears, this is not the case as this time I had no builders to follow. Dang.

With a lack of guidance it did not take me long to get hopelessly lost, cue wandering aimlessly up and down the Thames for ages. As you may recall, if you haven’t fallen asleep yet, I mentioned earlier that I had to go through a mall to get to the DLR station. I decided to use this logic in reverse, yet going up one escalator too many I found myself in a sport psychiatrist. Quickly, going back downstairs, I ended up in an office block. What kind of shopping centre is this?!

As you are able to read this entry, it is safe to assume that I got out of that weird, strange building and managed to find my way to Oxford Street. The shops welcomed me with open arms, well they would have done if shops had arms. A lot of caffeine and trying shoes on later, it was time to return to Marmite Land (that’s Paddington to you and me)

The End!

21 books

When it was suggested to me that one of the things that I should put on my list was ‘read 21 books’ I thought this was going to be a cake walk as I live and breathe books. However what I wasn’t reckoning with was all the books that I would be required to read for uni and my dissertation hence the many books about fans.
1.       Heartstone
2.       Self-preservation society
3.       Meet me a cupcake café
4.       Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban
5.       Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
6.       Courage
7.       Dry Rot and Daffodils
8.       The Fan Museum
9.       Fans
10.   Fans
11.   School for Scandal
12.   Life and Letters of Bath in the eighteenth century
13.   Smile or Die
14.   Your blue-eyed boy
15.   Schlaflos im Hamburg
16.   Mr Funny
17.   Mr Chatterbox
18.   Little Miss Stubborn and the Unicorn
19.   Christian Lacroiux and the tale of sleeping beauty
20.   Ice cream and happiness
21.   The Grand Tour

I managed to read the first five until I was told that I do in fact have to do a dissertation this year and should probably start doing research for that. Well there goes my plan to re-read all seven of the Harry Potter books before the last film came out. Many of books on the list, such as 10 and 12 are some hefty door-stops and therefore to make this challenge easier I’ve had to compensate with some Mr Men books.

the cow didn't make it, neither did the wall

With time dwindling till the anniversary of my birth, cuts had to be made. The 'milking a cow' task has caused more trouble than its worth, such as where the hell am I going to find a cow to milk? Funnily enough our university also doubles up as a farm and thus there are many cows in the fields around campus. Although they don't make very good conversation partners, not like the cows in the field next to our house, now those I can have a good moo with. I was tempted to go into the said field at uni with a bucket and a stool and just grab a cow by the udders and have done with it, but having been chased by cows before I thought that this may not be a very good idea.

This task was therefore abandoned in favour of demolishing a wall.

I was feeling in a particularly destructive mood lately and bricks and mortar are not going to hold me back :)

I've always wanted to demolish a wall, there's a very satisfying feeling in watching a structure crumble in front of you and know that you are the cause of its fall down.
